If you're just starting your journey with WordPress, you've probably encountered two approaches to building websites: traditional WordPress themes and visual builders. Choosing between them can seem puzzling, so in this post I'll explain the differences in a simple and understandable way.
Traditional WordPress themes are ready-made templates that you install on your site. They define the look and layout of your entire website. After installing a theme, you can customize basic elements like colors, fonts, or your logo using WordPress's built-in Customizer.
Examples of popular traditional themes: Astra, GeneratePress, OceanWP.
Advantages of traditional themes:
Disadvantages of traditional themes:
Visual builders are plugins that let you build pages using a "drag and drop" method in a visual mode. You see exactly what you're creating in real-time. The most popular visual builders are Elementor, Divi Builder, Beaver Builder, and WPBakery.

Disadvantages of visual builders:
For beginners who want to quickly set up a professional-looking site without unnecessary complications, a traditional theme will often be the better choice. Especially if you're planning a blog, simple business website, or portfolio.
However, if you care about full control over design, plan to create a more complex site with custom sections, and performance isn't your number one priority, a visual builder will give you greater possibilities.
It's also worth knowing that these two worlds are increasingly overlapping. Many modern themes work great with popular builders, and since WordPress 5.0, we also have the built-in Gutenberg block editor, which represents a certain compromise between both philosophies.
There's no one universal answer. Everything depends on your needs, technical skills, and the type of site you want to create. The good news is that regardless of your choice, WordPress gives you the ability to create a professional website without needing to learn programming.
